A friend asked Alexi if he’d heard of phossy jaw. Nope. This led down a grim rabbit hole: girls and women working in match factories, exposed to phosphorus and developing horrific problems with their teeth and jaws. Naturally, with our love of the macabre, Alexi wrote a song about it. The original title was “Phossy Jaw”. A bit bleak and on the nose. “Matchstick Girl” is sweeter. More romantic? TCOSS knows Tom Waits loves beautiful melodies telling him terrible things. “Matchstick Girl,” then, is for Tom. Also, says Alexi, “I really like the smell of burnt matches.”
